Flax Processing | Workshop: Make Your Own Linen Yarn in Rijswijk (GLD) + Guided Tour

During this workshop, Maud will guide you through the process of processing flax. Flaks is a sustainable crop used to make linen. You’ll get hands-on experience working with flax from De Schildertuin and learn, step by step, how this plant is turned into thread. At the end, you’ll go home with your own small ball of linen thread.

As you walk through De Schildertuin during the guided tour, you’ll be introduced to this craft—once widely practiced in the Netherlands—and discover how much time, knowledge, and collaboration with nature are needed to go from plant to product. And just how magically beautiful this process is!

The workshop takes place at De Schildertuin in Rijswijk (GLD), a biodiverse location for growing natural and sustainable art supplies such as dye plants and flax. Research is conducted both with and on Dutch nature.

De Schildertuin is located in a biodiverse area featuring a “fairytale forest”—a naturalized standard-tree orchard—a vegetable garden, an orchard with sheep, a nut grove, and a relatively young food forest. This is also where the wild foraging walk takes place.

This workshop is for anyone interested in nature, textiles, painting, or traditional crafts.
