Workshop The Willow Artist Make your own ink, paper and charcoal

What can you make from a willow tree? Much more than you might expect! During this creative afternoon workshop, you’ll discover how willow branches can be transformed into charcoal pencils, handmade paper, natural ink and a beautiful sketchbook.

November is the season when pollarded willow trees are traditionally cut. Many of the branches that are harvested during this process are simply composted or thrown away. This workshop gives them a second life. Together, we’ll explore the creative possibilities of this beautiful and versatile tree and turn its different parts into useful materials for drawing and making.

We’ll start by harvesting willow branches and then work with the wood and bark in different ways. You’ll learn how to make charcoal pencils from willow wood, create handmade paper from the bark and make natural ink from the remaining liquid. Along the way, you’ll learn more about the willow tree, traditional crafts and the techniques behind charcoal making, papermaking and bookbinding.

Everything we make comes together in your own handmade sketchbook. You’ll bind the sketchbook yourself during the workshop and, once your willow paper has dried, you can use it as the cover. You can then use your willow charcoal pencils and natural ink to draw, sketch and experiment in your new sketchbook.

Perfect for anyone who enjoys being creative, working with their hands and discovering traditional ways of making things from natural materials. You don’t need any previous experience with drawing, papermaking or bookbinding. Just come ready to get your hands dirty and explore what a willow tree has to offer.

Working with natural materials is more than just making something beautiful. It’s a way to slow down, reconnect with the landscape around you and rediscover the skills and resources that have been part of our surroundings for generations.
